Land remains top issue for Barbuda voters, says Walker
Land remains the top issue for Barbuda voters ahead of the April 30 general election. Trevor Walker made the statement after nomination day. He spoke for the Barbuda Peoples Movement.
Moreover, Walker said his party has campaigned on the ground for two weeks. He said voters responded well during the campaign. As a result, he feels encouraged by public feedback.
He said many voters raised land concerns. In addition, he said land policy dominates discussions across Barbuda. Therefore, he described land as the central campaign issue.
Walker also said many residents oppose government land policies. He criticised the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party approach. Moreover, he said voters show strong concern about land decisions.
He stressed that land has always shaped Barbuda politics. Furthermore, he said it still drives the current campaign. As a result, his party continues to focus on the issue.
He said voters fear government interference in land matters. In addition, they worry about land being used for development projects. Therefore, many residents want more control over decisions.
Walker said voters believe their interests are not protected. Moreover, they want a stronger voice in development planning. As a result, land governance remains a major concern.
He added that the BPM wants to act as a check and balance. In addition, he said the party will defend Barbuda interests. Therefore, he positioned the party as a protector of local rights.
Walker also urged residents to vote in the election. He called for strong voter turnout. Moreover, he said participation matters for the island’s future.
