The death toll from devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border has risen to 353.

More than 1,300 people remain missing or unaccounted for. Rescue teams continued searching for survivors on Thursday.

The disaster struck on Wednesday after a glacier collapse sent a huge wave of water, mud and debris through nearby communities.

Nepal has recorded most of the deaths. Authorities reported 350 deaths and 826 missing people in the country.

Tibet reported three deaths and 558 missing people.

Many of those still missing are foreign nationals. Nepal’s Tourism Board said 517 foreigners were among those missing in Nepal. At least 178 are from India.

Canadian officials said they were also trying to locate 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents in Nepal and Tibet.

The floods destroyed dozens of bridges and damaged almost 40 kilometres of roads. The damage has made rescue efforts more difficult.

Nepal’s army has rescued more than 100 people from affected areas. Helicopters also carried at least eight foreign nationals to Kathmandu.

Rescuers have found bodies as far as 100 kilometres downstream from the disaster zone.

The United Nations has released US$2 million from its emergency fund. The money will support medical care, shelter and water for people affected by the disaster.

The Nepal Red Cross has shifted its focus towards large-scale relief efforts. Officials said around 1,200 people have been displaced from at least three villages.

Early reports suggested an earthquake had triggered the disaster. However, the U.S. Geological Survey later said a glacier collapse caused the seismic activity.

Climate experts said an avalanche from a glacier likely triggered the flash flood. Water levels on one part of the Trishuli River rose by as much as nine metres in just 30 minutes.

The Hindu Kush Himalaya region has become more vulnerable to floods and landslides as glaciers continue to melt.
