Cabinet approves autism behavioural centre plan
Cabinet has approved plans for a new Cognitive Behavioural Centre in Antigua and Barbuda.
The centre will support people living with autism and other neurodivergent disorders.
Meanwhile, the announcement came during Thursday’s post-Cabinet briefing.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant shared details of the new initiative.
He said Health Minister Sir Michael Joseph brought the proposal before Cabinet.
According to Merchant, many families still struggle to access proper treatment and support services.
In addition, many caregivers face emotional, financial and social pressure every day.
Merchant said specialised services and trained professionals remain limited across the country.
As a result, Cabinet approved the new centre to improve healthcare support.
The facility will focus on early detection, assessment and treatment of autism spectrum disorder.
Furthermore, the centre will also help people with other neurodivergent conditions.
Merchant said the Ministry of Health has already started recruiting trained professionals.
The ministry is seeking occupational therapists, speech pathologists and neuropsychologists.
Meanwhile, the centre will provide services for both children and adults.
It will also offer counselling and educational guidance for parents and caregivers.
Merchant explained that early diagnosis can improve long-term developmental outcomes.
He added that early intervention can also improve quality of life for patients and families.
Therefore, the government sees the centre as part of wider healthcare improvements.
Cabinet members reportedly welcomed the initiative during discussions.
They described the project as an important step for national healthcare services.
In the meantime, the centre is expected to improve early identification of neurodivergent disorders.
Officials also believe the initiative will strengthen long-term patient support natio
