15-year-old detained over deadly French forest fire

French authorities have detained a 15-year-old boy suspected of starting a forest fire that killed two firefighters near Bordeaux airport on July 21.

The teenager now faces an investigation over the deadly blaze in western France. Authorities have placed him in juvenile detention while they continue to examine the cause of the fire.

The two firefighters died while fighting the flames. The fire trapped them inside their truck as they worked to control the blaze. Their deaths have sparked fresh concerns over France’s ability to respond to a growing number of wildfires.

Firefighter unions say crews need more resources as extreme heat continues to raise the risk of fires. They argue that firefighters need enough staff, equipment and support to deal with increasingly dangerous conditions.

Representatives from nine firefighter unions met with Interior Minister Laurent Nunez on Thursday. The meeting aimed to address concerns over resources and working conditions.

However, union representatives said the government’s commitments did not go far enough. They warned that firefighters could take industrial action in September if authorities fail to address their concerns.

The warning comes as firefighters continue to battle several forest fires across France. Much of the country faced another heatwave on Thursday, creating difficult conditions for emergency crews.

High temperatures and dry conditions can make wildfires spread quickly. Strong winds can also make it harder for firefighters to control the flames. As a result, emergency crews must remain ready to respond to new fires while continuing to fight existing ones.

France has faced an increasing threat from wildfires in recent years. Climate change has contributed to hotter and drier conditions across parts of Europe. These conditions can increase the risk of large and fast-moving fires.

The deaths of the two firefighters have added pressure on the French government to strengthen its response. Firefighter unions want authorities to provide crews with the resources they need before the next major emergency.

Meanwhile, investigators will continue examining the circumstances surrounding the Bordeaux fire. Authorities will also determine what role the 15-year-old may have played in starting the blaze.

The case remains under investigation, and the teenager’s detention does not mean authorities have established his guilt. Further legal proceedings will determine the next steps in the case.
