Rhythm of Culture: Caribbean Heritage Comes Alive in Dance
Students from the University of the West Indies brought Caribbean culture to life with a powerful dance showcase. Their performances took place at Queen’s Hall’s Winnifred Atwell Auditorium, where fifteen vibrant acts told stories of history, spirituality, and resilience. From the deep devotion of the Spiritual Baptists to Venezuela’s national dance, the show blended tradition with creativity.
The event opened with a tribute to the Spiritual Baptist movement and featured dances that captured everyday life, like women waiting for fishers to return home. The students also honored diverse cultural roots with elegant Bharatanatyam and local funerary dances. Each piece expressed themes of human rights, beauty, and celebration through movement.
The coordinator highlighted dance as more than entertainment—it connects body, mind, and spirit while reflecting Caribbean identity. This festival nurtures new talent while celebrating heritage through a mix of traditional and modern dance styles. Rhythm of Culture 2025 showed that art is a powerful way to unite and inspire communities across the Caribbean.
