Government Urges Public to Get Flu Shot as OPM Launches Vaccination Drive

Government

Government officials are urging the public to get their flu shots as the season worsens, and they have now launched a major vaccination drive at the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM). The initiative began on Thursday morning when a medical team led by Nurse Soraya Dupy Winston visited the OPM to administer shots to staff members.

The drive forms part of a wider national effort to boost flu protection as infections rise. Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said the flu circulating this season is severe, and therefore people should take the vaccine as soon as possible.

He noted that the vaccine is both safe and effective. Moreover, he encouraged residents to protect themselves, their children and their elderly relatives as the flu continues to spread. Merchant delivered the remarks during the post-Cabinet briefing, where he stressed that the government is taking the rising cases seriously.

Health officials have also warned that increased flu activity can strain workplaces, schools and clinics. Consequently, the government wants to reduce the number of severe cases and prevent further disruptions across communities.

Merchant explained that the vaccination drive at the OPM is only the beginning. He said that the administration will continue rolling out similar efforts in other departments. Additionally, the Ministry of Health plans to expand public awareness campaigns throughout the season.

He added that getting vaccinated remains one of the most effective ways to avoid complications. Therefore, he urged people not to delay, especially those with chronic illnesses.

Cabinet members also highlighted the importance of strong public health systems during peak flu periods. They said the campaign reflects their commitment to preparedness and early prevention.

Furthermore, officials believe that easy access to vaccines will help reduce the overall impact of the flu in the coming weeks. They also encouraged communities to stay alert, follow hygiene practices and pay attention to symptoms.

As flu season continues to intensify, the government plans to keep urging residents to take action. With consistent vaccination and public awareness, officials hope to limit the spread and protect the nation’s most vulnerable groups.
