APUA Reaches Record Water Output as Modernization Push Accelerates

APUA

APUA is reporting major gains in water production and system upgrades, according to a detailed update presented to Cabinet last week. The Authority said it produced 9.2 million gallons of water per day over the past week. Moreover, officials expect output to reach 10.6 million gallons this week. That would mark the highest daily production ever recorded in Antigua and Barbuda.

Additionally, APUA said the increased output should ease supply challenges affecting homes and businesses. The improved numbers follow months of system adjustments and expanded desalination support.

Furthermore, Cabinet spokesman Maurice Merchant said APUA is rolling out new technology to strengthen system reliability. He explained that the Authority is introducing real-time leak detection tools. These tools allow teams to identify problems faster, respond to disruptions sooner, and reduce water loss across the network.

APUA will also begin installing 1,000 smart meters nationwide. According to Merchant, the devices will curb tampering, improve billing accuracy, and support the shift toward a modern digital system. He said the meters form a major part of APUA’s long-term efficiency strategy.

Meanwhile, dredging at Crabbs Bay continues. Merchant said about 80,000 cubic meters of material remain. He noted that the final phase should be completed within three to four months. Once finished, the dredging will support the operation of the new LNG plant at Crabbs. The plant is expected to play an important role in national energy planning.

Merchant added that the Cabinet welcomed the updates and expects the improvements to strengthen the country’s water security. He said the government views the increased production and modernization efforts as essential steps toward reliable service and long-term resilience.

APUA said it will continue monitoring production levels through the coming week. Officials expect the new systems to cut losses, improve delivery, and support future demand as growth continues.
