Leaders of the Caribbean judiciary have condemned recent remarks by Prime Minister Gaston Browne that they say undermine the independence of the courts.

The judicial officials stressed the importance of maintaining the separation of powers and protecting the judiciary from political influence. They argued that public confidence in the justice system depends on courts being able to operate independently and without interference.

The response follows comments by Browne calling for tougher action against gun crimes and repeat offenders, including criticism of judicial decisions on bail and sentencing. His remarks sparked debate across the region about the balance between public safety concerns and judicial independence.

Judicial leaders emphasized that while court decisions may be subject to public discussion, respect for the independence of the judiciary remains a cornerstone of democratic governance and the rule of law.
