Antigua Polls Praised but Media Concerns Raised

Antigua

Antigua and Barbuda elections were transparent, peaceful, and well managed, observers said. The Commonwealth Observer Group shared its preliminary findings after the 2026 General Elections.

Overall, the group praised the conduct of the process. They noted that election day remained calm and orderly. As a result, stakeholders helped ensure a smooth experience for voters.

Meanwhile, concerns about media polarisation emerged during the election period. Observers pointed to repeated issues seen in past reports. Therefore, they urged improvements in political communication.

At a press conference in St John’s, Chairperson Hon. Dr Pelonomi Venson spoke on behalf of the group. She highlighted both strengths and concerns from the process.

Specifically, observers noted personal attacks in media spaces. These appeared on radio stations and across social media platforms. Consequently, the group advised stronger editorial standards.

In addition, they called for clearer guidelines. These would promote respectful political communication during campaigns. As a result, public debate could become more constructive.

Meanwhile, the group observed campaign activities across the country. Rallies and political events drew strong attendance. This reflected active citizen participation in democracy.

Furthermore, the group repeated an earlier recommendation. They urged stronger campaign finance laws. They also encouraged better regulation and transparency in political funding.

At the same time, the electoral commission received praise. It provided a detailed information pack to observers. This included polling locations and voter data.

Importantly, the data covered age and gender breakdowns. Because of this, voting processes flowed smoothly at polling stations. Observers reported no major disruptions.

Additionally, the group commended citizens of Antigua and Barbuda. They recognised their continued commitment to democratic values. This contributed to a peaceful electoral environment.

Looking ahead, the group will submit its final report soon. It will go to Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon. Shirley Botchwey. Afterward, it will be shared with key stakeholders.

These include the government, electoral commission, and political parties. Therefore, further recommendations will guide future improvements.

Finally, the Commonwealth continues to support its member states. It works to strengthen democracy, governance, and human rights.
