ABWU calls for stronger worker protections before Labour Day
ABWU is calling for stronger protections and greater fairness for workers. The union shared this message ahead of Labour Day.
Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union marked Labour Week with a clear theme. It focused on social development and equity.
In addition, General Secretary David Massiah highlighted past achievements. He pointed to the Labour Code and Social Security Scheme.
He said these measures improved worker protection. They also strengthened financial security across the workforce.
Moreover, he noted a key milestone. The union helped reduce the work week from 48 to 40 hours. As a result, workers gained better balance and quality of life.
He added that these gains came from years of advocacy. Workers and their representatives pushed for change.
However, he warned that more work is needed. The labour system must adapt to modern demands.
For example, he said the world of work is changing fast. Technology continues to reshape industries. At the same time, gig work is expanding.
In addition, remote work is becoming more common. Therefore, laws must evolve to keep pace.
He called for updated legislation and stronger accountability. He also urged more training opportunities for workers.
Furthermore, he stressed the need for practical skills. These skills help workers find meaningful jobs. They also support national development.
At the same time, he emphasized worker dignity. He said rights must remain protected despite change.
He also warned against unfair practices. Employers must not profit at the expense of workers. Workers deserve fair pay and security.
Moreover, he called for equal opportunity. Women and young workers need fair access to jobs. They also deserve equal pay for equal value.
In addition, he stressed the importance of education. Skills training and lifelong learning must improve access to opportunities.
The union also raised concerns about injury support. It urged the government to create disability insurance. Current systems do not meet worker needs.
Finally, he encouraged unity among workers. He invited them to join the Labour Day march and rally.
Overall, the union is pushing for stronger worker protections and fairer conditions.
