St John’s Public Cemetery to Close for New Burials
St John’s Public Cemetery will stop accepting new burials on March 31, 2026, the government announced. This decision comes as the historic site reaches full capacity.
During this week’s post-Cabinet briefing, Director of Communications Maurice Merchant confirmed the closure. He explained that only new graves will be affected. Families with existing plots can continue burials as usual.
“Cabinet decided that new burials will end at the St John’s Cemetery from the end of this month,” Merchant said. “Afterward, new interments will only occur at Tranquility Park.”
The transition to Tranquility Park Cemetery has already started. However, officials warn the public may experience a teething phase. People will need time to adjust to the new infrastructure and regulations.
“For example, Tranquility Park does not allow plastic flowers,” Merchant explained. “You can still see many, but the situation will gradually improve.”
The government described the shift as a necessary step for urban space management. St John’s Cemetery has served the community for decades, and authorities aim to preserve its legacy.
Eventually, the historic site will become a managed memorial space. This plan will honor those already interred while allowing modern burial practices at Tranquility Park.
Merchant encouraged families to understand the changes. “We are making these adjustments to ensure respectful management of both the old and new cemeteries,” he said.
The government also stressed that the move will provide better facilities and more organized burials at Tranquility Park. Officials remain committed to supporting families throughout the transition.
As a result, the community can expect improved services while maintaining respect for historic burial sites. Citizens are advised to plan future burials at Tranquility Park after March 31.
