PM Browne pushes OECS Air plan with regional leaders

PM

PM Gaston Browne continues promoting his proposal for a regional airline called OECS Air. He is discussing the plan with Caribbean leaders.

Browne first raised the idea while seeking stability for regional aviation. His proposal positions LIAT as a dedicated sub-regional carrier. Under the plan, the airline would operate under the OECS Air banner.

Recently, the President of the Territorial Council of Saint-Martin, Louis Mussington, visited Antigua. During the visit, he explored cooperation between Air Antilles and LIAT.

However, Browne suggested a broader approach. Instead of simple cooperation, he proposed merging both airlines into OECS Air.

Speaking on his weekly radio programme, Browne outlined possible funding sources. First, he identified about US$60 million in unclaimed deposit receipts.

These funds sit at the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank. Browne believes they could support the airline initiative.

In addition, he pointed to a second funding source. The European Union Interreg Fund could provide further support.

This financing mechanism is accessible through French overseas territories. These include Guadeloupe and Martinique.

Browne estimates the fund could contribute about 70 million euros. Together, both funding streams could strengthen the project.

Therefore, the government could purchase or lease more aircraft. Browne suggested adding five to six planes.

As a result, the fleet could reach about 14 aircraft. He believes that number could adequately serve the region.

“We should be able to purchase or maybe lease another five to six aircraft,” Browne said.

Meanwhile, Browne asked Mussington to consult leaders in Guadeloupe. He also requested discussions with French metropolitan authorities.

These talks would determine if French territories will join OECS states in the airline venture.

Beyond regional routes, Browne also proposed wider travel options. For example, the airline could operate flights to Panama City.

He said the route could support trade diversification. This idea comes as global economic conditions remain uncertain.

In addition, Browne noted rising tariffs from the United States. Therefore, new trade links could benefit consumers.

He also said Panama offers high-quality products at lower prices than North American markets.

However, the OECS Air proposal remains in the discussion stage. Regional governments must continue consultations.

Only after these talks will leaders decide whether to move the project toward implementation.
