Antigua & Barbuda Joins CELAC Concern Over U.S. Forces
Antigua and Barbuda joined 19 other members of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in voicing concern about the rising U.S. military presence in the Caribbean. The United States deployed warships and aircraft, saying the action targets drug trafficking. However, many regional leaders believe it could fuel tension instead of easing it.
In a joint statement, CELAC members said the fight against crime must also respect sovereignty and international law. They warned that the build-up could harm peace and security across the region. Leaders stressed that cooperation and dialogue, not outside force, should guide regional security.
The declaration reminded the world that Latin America and the Caribbean are recognized as a “Zone of Peace.” CELAC leaders said this principle demands non-interference and peaceful solutions to disputes. They argued that true security depends on respect among nations.
The statement also cited the Treaty of Tlatelolco, which created the first nuclear-weapon-free zone in a populated region. By invoking this treaty, CELAC leaders showed their long-standing commitment to stability and peace in the Caribbean.
