Dozens benefit from Malaka Parker health fair
Dozens benefit from a free health screening event in Yorks over the weekend. The fair was organised by Malaka Parker.
First, residents gathered at the Yorks Basketball Court. The event created a relaxed and accessible setting for healthcare services.
Importantly, an air-conditioned tent supported comfort during the screenings. Residents attended steadily throughout the day.
Meanwhile, medical professionals provided a range of services. A paediatrician, ophthalmologist, and general practitioner took part.
As a result, residents received free consultations and basic health checks. Many took advantage of the services offered.
Parker described the turnout as a success. She said it shows strong community demand for local healthcare access.
Furthermore, she stressed the need for decentralised medical support. She believes services should extend beyond traditional health facilities.
“What communities require,” she said, “is community-level healthcare.”
Therefore, she proposed a mobile screening unit. This unit would travel into communities.
In addition, it would provide testing and basic services. She said this would improve access for residents.
Earlier in the day, Parker also addressed residents directly. She used a mobile public address system to speak to the crowd.
She emphasized that her focus is on people, not politics. She made her position clear to those present.
“I’m about people,” she said. “I don’t care about political colours.”
Moreover, she outlined her Community Development Plan. The plan includes healthcare and wellness as key priorities.
For example, it includes an MBS Pharmacy outlet at Cedar Grove Clinic. It also proposes longer clinic hours.
In addition, the plan features “Fit Village” clubs. It also includes training for Wellness Champions.
Meanwhile, Parker thanked sponsors and volunteers. She said their support made the event possible.
As a result, she pledged to continue building partnerships. She wants more community health initiatives in the future.
Finally, Parker said she remains committed to expanding local healthcare access. She plans to continue similar outreach efforts across the constituency.
