Gov’t has reached an amicable settlement in the decades-old case involving Elloy De Freitas. As a result, one of the longest legal disputes in Antigua and Barbuda has finally ended.

The case dates back to 1990. At the time, De Freitas worked as an extension officer in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Soon after, a dispute arose between De Freitas and the government. The matter later became known as De Freitas versus the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Lands, and Housing.

According to officials, the conflict began after De Freitas joined peaceful demonstrations. Those protests focused on claims of government corruption.

In addition, the demonstrations followed a national commission of inquiry that raised serious concerns.

As a result, De Freitas filed a fundamental rights case against the state. The legal battle then moved slowly through the courts for nearly three decades.

However, the Cabinet has now decided to close the matter. Government officials say the decision brings long-awaited closure.

Meanwhile, Maurice Merchant, Director of Communications, explained the government’s position. He said the administration wanted a fair and respectful resolution.

Furthermore, he noted that the settlement supports justice and reconciliation.

Merchant also said the government acted to protect fundamental human rights. Therefore, officials agreed to resolve the case through an amicable settlement.

“This decision allows the matter to finally come to an end,” Merchant explained.

Over the years, the case involved repeated negotiations and legal proceedings. Consequently, it remained active far longer than expected.

Now, however, both sides have agreed to settle the dispute.

Although officials did not reveal the full financial terms, some details were confirmed. The agreement includes payment of agreed legal costs.

Therefore, all outstanding legal issues between the parties are now resolved.

Members of Cabinet welcomed the outcome. They said the settlement reflects respect for fairness and the rule of law.

In addition, officials stressed the importance of resolving historical legal disputes. They believe closing such cases strengthens public confidence.

The administration of Gaston Browne said the move also supports justice and national reconciliation.

Finally, government leaders expressed satisfaction that the matter has ended peacefully.
