Jury Convicts Harrigan in Nigel Christian Murder Case

Jury

Jury members have convicted Saleim Harrigan of murdering Nigel Christian. The decision came after six years.

The nine-member jury reached a unanimous verdict on Monday evening. It delivered the ruling just after 7:20pm.

Earlier, jurors began deliberations at 1:55pm. They spent over five hours reviewing the evidence.

Before that, Justice Rajiv Persaud summed up the case. His directions to the jury lasted more than four hours.

At one point, jurors returned around 6pm. They asked for more time before making a final decision.

Now, Harrigan, 35, awaits sentencing. The court set June 19 for that hearing.

In contrast, Wayne Thomas and Lasean Bully were acquitted. Their outcomes differed after the verdict.

Authorities returned Thomas to prison due to another matter. Meanwhile, Bully left the courtroom quickly.

The case stems from a crime in July 2020. Armed men abducted Nigel Christian from his McKinnons home.

During the incident, his mother witnessed the attack. One of the men pointed a weapon at her.

Later that day, authorities found Christian’s body in Thibou’s. He had been shot dead.

The killing shocked Antigua and Barbuda. It also triggered a long investigation.

Police charged the three men in April 2021. The trial started on February 19 and ran for over two months.

Prosecutors presented forensic and cellular evidence. They also relied on key witness testimony.

A driver told the court he transported the accused men. He said he saw them enter the home and take Christian.

He claimed he later found the body. He also said the accused contacted him afterward.

FBI data supported parts of his account. It placed Harrigan at key locations.

Forensic tests linked Harrigan to items found at different sites. These included gloves and overalls.

Defense attorneys challenged the evidence. They raised concerns about police actions and handling of items.

Despite this, the jury convicted Harrigan. They cleared the other two men.

The verdict closes a long and painful chapter. For Christian’s family, it brings some measure of justice.
