Commonwealth Observers Begin Work for 2026 Elections
Commonwealth observers have begun work in Antigua and Barbuda for the 2026 General Elections. The team arrived after deployment by Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey.
First, the group formed after an invitation from the government. This step shows cooperation with international partners.
The team is led by Dr Pelonomi Venson, a former Foreign Affairs Minister of Botswana. In addition, three other experts joined the mission.
These members bring experience in elections, politics, civil society, and media. Therefore, they aim to give a balanced and credible review.
Meanwhile, Botchwey praised the willingness of experts to support democracy. She said such efforts strengthen democratic systems across Commonwealth countries.
Moreover, she expressed confidence in the group’s leadership and skills. She expects a fair and independent assessment of the election process.
Now, the observers are in the country for their full mandate period. They will review all stages of the elections carefully.
First, they will study the pre-election environment. Next, they will observe polling day activities.
After that, they will assess the post-election period. They will also follow national laws and international standards.
In her arrival statement, Venson called the role an honour. She stressed the importance of strong democratic institutions.
Furthermore, she said elections help build public trust. She urged all stakeholders to support fairness and transparency.
She also highlighted the need for inclusive and participatory democracy. Every vote, she said, must carry equal weight.
During their stay, the group will meet many stakeholders. These include election officials, political leaders, and civil groups.
They will also engage security agencies and the diplomatic community. Other observer missions will also be part of discussions.
Additionally, observers will spread across both islands. They will monitor polling, counting, and results processes.
Soon after election day, the group will release an interim statement. This report will share early findings.
Finally, a full report will follow later. It will provide a complete review of the election process.
