Minimum Wage Increase Expected to Benefit Nearly 8000 Workers
Workers in Antigua and Barbuda will benefit from a planned minimum wage increase, officials said on Thursday.
Director General of Communications in the Office of the Prime Minister, Maurice Merchant, shared data reviewed by Cabinet.
Currently, many employees earn between $9 and $12 per hour. In total, about 7,264 workers fall into this category.
Merchant noted that the country has roughly 45,053 workers overall. Therefore, the increase will reach a large segment of the workforce.
The wage adjustment targets several sectors. For example, gas station attendants, security workers, and crossing guards will see higher earnings.
Additionally, employees in the government’s drug program and other public services will gain from the increase.
In the hospitality industry, roughly 740 workers earn between $9 and $12 per hour. They will also benefit.
Cabinet approved a recommendation to raise the minimum wage to $13 per hour. The government will implement the increase gradually over three years.
Merchant explained that a phased approach allows businesses to adjust while workers receive steady wage improvements.
Officials said gradual increases prevent potential job losses in sectors that might struggle with sudden higher wages.
Moreover, the government seeks to improve living standards while maintaining economic stability. They want to balance worker needs with business sustainability.
Employees should follow updates as the phased plan progresses. Cabinet asked the advisory committee to consult stakeholders and finalize the timeline.
The wage increase demonstrates the government’s commitment to raising incomes responsibly. It also reflects attention to Social Security data and workforce needs.
Furthermore, the plan focuses on key industries, such as hospitality and public services, where many low-wage workers operate.
As the government implements the plan, workers will gradually move from $9–$12 per hour to $13 per hour over three years.
This initiative strengthens economic fairness while helping employers manage the adjustment smoothly.
Ultimately, nearly 8,000 workers will see tangible improvements in earnings, boosting livelihoods and workforce motivation.
The phased plan ensures employees benefit without destabilizing businesses or the broader economy.
