Canada takes action after screwworm cases emerge in Texas

Canada

Canada has temporarily banned cattle, horses, and other livestock from Texas after officials found flesh-eating screwworm larvae in two calves.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency announced that animals that were in Texas within 21 days of crossing the border will not be allowed into Canada. The measure aims to protect Canadian livestock from the parasite.

Earlier this week, officials found the first infected calf near La Pryor, close to the Mexico border. Then, a second case appeared in nearby Zavala County. These are the first screwworm cases reported in Texas in about 60 years.

Meanwhile, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster. He warned that the outbreak could threaten the state’s agricultural industry. As a result, authorities have increased surveillance, set up control zones, and introduced movement restrictions in affected areas.

The outbreak is part of a wider spread of screwworm cases that has moved through Central America and Mexico. Therefore, officials in both the United States and Canada are closely monitoring the situation.
