This Accused Denies Role in Nigel Christian Murder Trial
This has been the hardest time in his life, Wayne Thomas told the court. He spoke on Tuesday during the ongoing Nigel Christian murder trial. Moreover, he said he was innocent of all charges.
Thomas is one of three men on trial. The others are Saleim Harrigan and Lasean Bully. All three face charges for abduction and murder. However, they have all pleaded not guilty.
The case centers on the killing of senior Customs official Nigel Christian. Prosecutors say the men abducted him at gunpoint. This allegedly happened at his McKinnons home on July 10, 2020. Shortly after, they say he was shot dead.
Since February 19, the trial has been underway. On Tuesday, each accused gave an unsworn statement. This option allows them to speak without cross-examination.
Thomas said he trusted the court throughout the trial. In addition, he insisted he had no role in the crime. “I did not kill anybody,” he said. He also denied any gang links.
Furthermore, he stood by statements he gave to police. He ended by placing his future in the court’s hands.
Meanwhile, Harrigan strongly rejected the charges. He denied any role in the killing or planning. In fact, he accused police of planting evidence.
He challenged DNA findings presented by the prosecution. These samples were linked to items found at Cassada Gardens and Perry Bay. However, Harrigan said the items were not his.
He also questioned a photo found on his phone. He claimed he did not know how it got there. Still, he noted he gave police his password right away.
In contrast, Bully gave a brief statement. He said he knew nothing about the crime. He also denied any contact with the alleged driver.
The prosecution’s case relies on a key witness. The witness claims he drove the accused on the day. He said he saw them abduct Christian and later found his body.
Additionally, the Crown presented phone data and DNA evidence. They argue this supports their timeline.
However, the defence challenged the investigation. They pointed to missing evidence and poor procedures. They also claimed others committed the crime.
Closing arguments are set for Wednesday. The court will then move closer to a verdict.
