Yasco Sports Complex finally opens long-awaited restrooms

Yasco

Yasco Sports Complex now has a long-awaited restroom and changing facility. On Friday morning, athletes, students, coaches, and officials gathered for the opening ceremony.

For years, the complex lacked proper restroom infrastructure. As a result, athletes and spectators faced constant challenges. Now, however, the new facility marks a major improvement.

The project cost about EC $590,000. Importantly, it came through a partnership between the Ministry of Education, Sports and Creative Industries and the Ministry of National Housing and Works.

For more than 15 years, the athletics community waited for proper restrooms. Therefore, many people welcomed the completion of the building.

During the ceremony, Sports Minister Daryll Matthew said the project represents the first step in a larger redevelopment plan.

He explained that the government plans more upgrades in the future. For example, the vision includes an administrative building and better spectator seating.

In addition, officials want to build a warm-up track. They also plan to add more restrooms specifically for athletes.

Meanwhile, the minister reflected on the long delay. The unfinished building had stood idle for years.

“Six months ago there was a tree growing inside that building,” Matthew said.

Because of that, he described the structure as an embarrassment for the country’s main athletics venue.

However, he praised the recent effort to complete the project. At the same time, he urged the public to protect the new facility.

“I would not want to come back and see vandalism or graffiti,” he said. “Let us take care of it.”

Similarly, Shauna Charles-Joseph, president of the Antigua and Barbuda Athletic Association, called the opening a meaningful moment.

According to her, athletes train at the complex every day. Families also attend competitions and national trials.

Yet proper restroom facilities were missing for years. Now, she said, that long wait has finally ended.

She also thanked the government for completing the project. In particular, she praised the minister for honoring a commitment made in December.

Earlier, Director of Sports Heather Samuel-Daley stressed the importance of the new building.

She said the facility restores comfort and dignity for athletes. This is especially important for young female athletes.

In the past, some athletes relied on poor alternatives. In fact, some young women avoided training because of the lack of restrooms.

The new building includes separate sections for athletes and spectators. It also provides male and female restrooms and changing areas.

Finally, officials ended the ceremony with a ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling.

With inter-schools competitions next week, the timing is ideal. National trials are also approaching soon.

Therefore, the new facility arrives at a crucial moment. More importantly, it marks the first step in upgrading the Yasco Sports Complex.
