Caribbean Tourism Sector Eyes Continued Growth
The Caribbean tourism sector remains optimistic about future growth despite global economic uncertainty and changing travel trends. Industry leaders shared that outlook as Caribbean Tourism Week opened in New York on Monday.
The event, hosted by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), marks the start of Caribbean American Heritage Month. This year’s theme is “One Caribbean: Infinite Experiences.”
CTO Chairman and Barbados Tourism Minister Ian Gooding-Edghill said the region recorded strong results last year. Visitor arrivals increased by 2.5 percent, bringing about 900,000 more travelers to the Caribbean. Total arrivals also moved above pre-pandemic levels.
Cruise travel also showed strong growth. Cruise visits rose by 5.2 percent and exceeded 2019 levels by more than 16 percent. Gooding-Edghill said the figures show that travelers continue to choose Caribbean destinations for unique and authentic experiences.
Officials expect steady growth for the rest of 2026. Better air links, stronger regional cooperation, and continued demand for travel are expected to support the sector.
Gooding-Edghill said regional leaders must continue to improve competitiveness. He noted that destinations need to invest in modernization and innovation to keep pace with changing market demands.
Tourism officials also want to expand into new markets. Latin America offers strong potential due to its proximity, growing flight connections, and increasing interest in visiting multiple destinations during a single trip.
The region is also strengthening ties with Africa through cultural partnerships and diaspora connections. Leaders see opportunities for future growth through stronger connections between the two regions.
Gooding-Edghill said the industry remains a key pillar of many Caribbean economies. It supports jobs, attracts investment, and creates business opportunities across the region.
