ICE Suspends Most Vehicle Stops After Fatal Shootings

ICE

The Trump administration has ordered ICE to stop most routine vehicle stops after two fatal shootings in one week. The decision comes as investigators review the incidents and officials face growing public concern.

The policy change followed the death of 26-year-old Colombian national Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero in Maine on Monday. An immigration officer shot him during an enforcement operation. A week earlier, another officer killed a driver during a similar incident in Houston.

However, the new rules still allow officers to stop vehicles in certain cases. These include criminal warrants and operations with other law enforcement agencies. Officials said the change aims to lower the risk of more deadly encounters during routine stops.

Meanwhile, another fatal incident happened in Florida on Tuesday. A tractor-trailer struck and killed a 28-year-old man while he ran from federal immigration officers. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding that case.

The Maine shooting led to protests across the state. Hundreds of people gathered outside a detention centre in Scarborough. They called for answers and stronger oversight. In addition, Maine’s congressional delegation requested a full investigation.

According to the Department of Homeland Security, officers were watching a home connected to a person facing a final deportation order. When a vehicle left the area, officers attempted to stop it. The driver tried to escape, and an officer opened fire. The department said the officer believed the driver created a danger.

Still, many questions remain about the shooting. The officers did not use body cameras, which has made it harder for investigators to confirm what happened. Officials are reviewing whether the driver posed an immediate threat before the officer fired.

Border Czar Tom Homan said investigators will determine whether officers followed the law and agency rules. He added that officials will hold anyone responsible if they find misconduct.

The shooting also sparked criticism from Colombia. Outgoing President Gustavo Petro demanded an explanation from the United States and condemned the killing. Advocacy groups said Durán Guerrero had permission to work in the country. He leaves behind his wife and young daughter.

As investigations continue, public attention remains focused on immigration enforcement practices and the use of force by federal officers.
