APUA Responds to Concerns Over Exposed Pipeline

The Antigua Public Utilities Authority (APUA) has responded to concerns about an exposed seawater pipeline linked to one of its Reverse Osmosis plants.

The issue gained attention on social media after reports that a person fell near the area. APUA said it was thankful the individual did not suffer serious injuries.

According to APUA, the pipeline and concrete anchor blocks help move seawater into the desalination system. The infrastructure also helps discharge brine during the water treatment process.

APUA explained that low tide often makes the pipeline more visible. During these periods, sections of the infrastructure may appear above the waterline.

The Authority said it has installed buoy markers several times to warn the public about the location of the lines. However, APUA stated that unauthorized individuals repeatedly removed the markers.

APUA also noted that desalinated water now plays a major role in the country’s water supply because of ongoing drought conditions and reduced surface water resources.

The Authority said seawater intake and discharge systems are necessary for producing drinking water for thousands of customers across Antigua and Barbuda.

APUA added that it welcomes public discussion on the matter and wants residents to better understand how the desalination process works.
