Cement shortages affecting Antigua and Barbuda could soon ease, according to the government. Officials say dredging work near the cement silos at Crabbes is nearing completion. As a result, cement supplies could improve in the coming weeks.

The update came during the 2026 Throne Speech on Tuesday. Governor-General Sir Rodney Williams delivered the address during the ceremonial opening of Parliament.

During the speech, Sir Rodney acknowledged the challenges caused by recent cement shortages. He explained that the issue affected several construction and infrastructure projects across the country. However, officials now expect the situation to improve shortly.

Sir Rodney said dredging work in the channel leading to the silos at Crabbes is almost complete. Therefore, the government believes the shortage could soon end.

Additionally, the Throne Speech highlighted several major road and infrastructure projects currently underway across Antigua and Barbuda. Officials confirmed that repairs and upgrades continue on important highways nationwide.

The government said crews recently repaired or upgraded the Sir George Walter Highway, Friars Hill Road, Sir Sidney Walling Highway, Valley Road from Golden Grove to Old Road, and the Parham to Willikies Highway.

Meanwhile, work also continues on All Saints Road. At the same time, crews are paving secondary roads within villages and communities across the island.

Furthermore, the Throne Speech revealed additional financial support for road rehabilitation projects. According to the government, a consortium of banks agreed to provide EC$150 million through a vehicle user-fee arrangement.

Officials believe the funding will help accelerate ongoing roadworks and infrastructure improvements. The government also praised workers involved in the national programme.

Sir Rodney thanked Works Minister Maria Browne and staff within the Ministry of Works for managing the projects. He said the workforce performed admirably while handling the extensive infrastructure programme.

In recent months, cement shortages have affected several construction projects across the region. Supply chain pressures and shipping challenges contributed to delays and reduced availability.

Despite those challenges, the government remains optimistic about improvements ahead. Officials believe completion of the dredging work at Crabbes will strengthen cement delivery and storage capacity moving forward.

Consequently, authorities expect infrastructure and construction projects across Antigua and Barbuda to progress more smoothly in the near future.
