St. Joseph’s Academy retains debate championship title

St. Joseph’s Academy retained the Caribbean Union Bank Inter-secondary School Debate Championship title on Tuesday after defeating Sir Novelle Richards Academy in the finals. The championship debate took place at the University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus and attracted strong support from students, teachers, and organisers.

Additionally, the Ministry of Education’s Education Broadcasting Unit hosted the highly anticipated finals. Supporters closely followed the competition as both schools battled for the championship crown.

This year’s moot focused on the topic: “CARICOM offers the best option for Member States to maintain their sovereignty.” Sir Novelle Richards Academy argued in favour of the proposition. Meanwhile, St. Joseph’s Academy argued against the motion from the opposition side.

Throughout the debate, both teams displayed confidence, preparation, and strong speaking skills. Students also delivered detailed arguments on regional cooperation, governance, and sovereignty within CARICOM member states.

Furthermore, judges and supporters witnessed a competitive exchange between both schools during the championship round. Each team presented researched points while responding carefully to opposing arguments.

Following the finals, organisers congratulated St. Joseph’s Academy for successfully defending its title. At the same time, organisers praised Sir Novelle Richards Academy for its strong performance throughout the season and during the final debate.

The Ministry of Education also commended both schools for demonstrating excellence, discipline, and professionalism. Officials praised the students for showing the true spirit of debate and academic competition.

Importantly, the annual championship continues to strengthen critical thinking and communication skills among students across Antigua and Barbuda. Organisers say the competition also helps students improve research abilities and public speaking confidence.

In addition, the debate championship encourages young people to engage in regional and civic issues affecting Caribbean societies. Students gain valuable experience in teamwork, analysis, and presenting arguments under pressure.

Tuesday’s final marked another successful staging of the national competition. Supporters applauded both schools for delivering an exciting and respectful debate from start to finish.

As a result, St. Joseph’s Academy once again secured the championship title against one of the competition’s strongest challengers. Meanwhile, Sir Novelle Richards Academy earned praise for consistency and determination throughout the debate season.
