Pringle slams water crisis, vows fast relief

Pringle

Jamale Pringle has called the country’s water crisis an “indignity.” Moreover, he promised quick relief if his party wins office.

The United Progressive Party leader said many homes still lack steady water. As a result, families wake early to collect it. In some cases, parents cannot bathe children before school. Meanwhile, elderly residents often wait long for deliveries.

“This is not inconvenience. This is indignity,” Pringle said. Therefore, he stressed urgent action is needed.

If elected, he pledged immediate relief measures. First, he would remove taxes on water tanks, pumps, and pressure systems. Consequently, families could better store and access water.

In addition, Pringle outlined plans to expand pipelines. He also promised improved maintenance of reverse osmosis plants. Furthermore, he wants to reactivate community storage tanks. Altogether, these steps aim to boost supply.

Ultimately, his goal is clear. He wants reliable, 24-hour water access across Antigua and Barbuda. Thus, he said his approach focuses on both short-term relief and long-term fixes.

However, the government has already invested millions into water improvements. Even so, challenges continue. Officials admit supply remains inconsistent in some areas.

At the same time, the Antigua Public Utilities Authority said water access has improved in recent years. Compared with past shortages, the situation is better. Nevertheless, many residents still face daily struggles.

Meanwhile, APUA has launched a Utility Amnesty Programme. This move follows a Cabinet decision in April 2026. Under the plan, some disconnected customers can restore services.

Specifically, the programme targets accounts inactive for over 180 days. Also, eligible users must have been disconnected on or before 30 September 2025. If approved, they can regularise accounts and reconnect utilities.

In conclusion, water access remains a major issue. Yet, competing solutions are now on the table. As a result, the debate over fixes is likely to intensify.
