Global Conflicts Raise Pressure on Antigua, Says Governor General

Global

Global conflicts are raising pressure on Antigua and Barbuda, Governor General Sir Rodney Williams warned during the Speech from the Throne.

He spoke during the foreign affairs segment of Tuesday’s parliamentary opening. He said small island states now face growing risks from global instability.

Foreign affairs, he added, remain one of the most difficult areas of governance. International tensions often impact countries that are not involved.

He highlighted two major conflicts affecting global conditions. These include the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions involving Israel and Iran.

Sanctions on Russia are increasing global costs. At the same time, unstable shipping routes are pushing up fuel and insurance prices.

He also referenced military activity involving the USA, Israel, and Iran. He said disruptions to sea lanes increase global shipping costs.

About 20 per cent of global oil moves through key sea routes. Any disruption to these routes quickly affects global prices.

Small states like Antigua and Barbuda did not cause these conflicts. However, they still face the economic impact.

“Small states have played no role in starting these conflicts,” he said.

Across the Caribbean, citizens are facing tougher economic conditions. Global instability continues to raise costs locally.

Sir Rodney also praised Foreign Affairs Minister E.P. Chet Greene. He said his reappointment reflects strong government confidence.

Greene manages foreign affairs during uncertain global conditions, he noted.

“The management of our state’s foreign affairs… demonstrates why faith is placed in the Honourable Paul Chet Greene,” he said.

CARICOM remains vital, Sir Rodney added. He said regional unity is essential for stability and growth.

He explained that Caribbean cooperation helps small states handle global shocks. It also strengthens resilience across the region.

The Speech from the Throne highlighted foreign affairs as a key national issue. It also linked global conflict to rising living costs.

Officials say Antigua and Barbuda will continue strengthening diplomacy and regional partnerships.
