No Local Malaria Spread Detected, PM Says
No evidence of local malaria transmission exists in Antigua and Barbuda, according to Prime Minister Gaston Browne. He addressed the issue during Pointe FM on Saturday.
Browne confirmed the country recorded two imported malaria cases. Unfortunately, one individual later died from the illness.
Health officials immediately carried out contact tracing and monitoring procedures. However, they found no signs of local spread.
“We had two cases of malaria. These were imported, and one of the individuals, unfortunately, succumbed to his illness,” Browne said.
“Having done the contact tracing and so on, there’s no evidence that there’s been any spread,” he added.
The Prime Minister also explained why transmission risk remains low. He said the mosquito species linked to malaria is not widespread locally.
“We don’t have a lot of them here, so it’s very unlikely that there would be any spread through mosquitoes or any other vector,” Browne said.
Meanwhile, officials continue strengthening public health surveillance measures nationwide. Authorities remain alert because of Ebola outbreaks in Central and East Africa.
As part of precautionary planning, the government reactivated the Infectious Disease Centre. Officials want the country prepared if travelers become ill after arrival.
“What we have done as well, we have reactivated the IDC — Infectious Disease Center,” Browne said.
“If any of them were to take ill while they’re here, we can easily isolate them and, of course, do the necessary contact tracing,” he added.
Browne also defended the decision to establish the Infectious Disease Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic. He said some critics once considered the facility unnecessary.
However, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of long-term health preparedness. He said epidemics and pandemics remain global realities.
“You’ll always have epidemics and pandemics,” Browne said.
“Having an infectious disease center for those types of contagious diseases is very important and is a very important part of the health infrastructure of the country,” he added.
In addition, authorities have restored enhanced airport health screening systems. These measures include infrared thermal scanners at entry points.
Officials continue monitoring international health developments closely. They also aim to strengthen national response systems.
The government says the measures are precautionary and proactive. Officials continue encouraging public awareness while maintaining calm.
Overall, Browne said Antigua and Barbuda remains prepared and vigilant. Health teams continue surveillance efforts to protect public safety.
