Commissioner Jeffers Urges National Action on Youth Violence and Drug Policy
Commissioner Jeffers is urging Antigua and Barbuda to take action on youth violence and drug use.
He recently attended high-level security talks in St Lucia. At the meetings, regional leaders raised concerns about marijuana use among school-aged children. They also warned that drug use links to youth instability.
In an exclusive interview with Observer media, Jeffers explained that Antigua and Barbuda allows possession of up to 15 grams of cannabis. However, he said this policy worries regional security heads. Many fear it harms young minds.
Jeffers stated, “Commissioners are concerned about 14 grams and 16 grams and how it affects youths in schools.” He added that marijuana can damage cognitive development. He believes decriminalization may have unintended consequences.
Jeffers stressed that youth violence is not only a police problem. He called for a national response. Schools, churches, NGOs, and communities must join forces. Without early action, Antigua could face problems similar to other countries.
He emphasized the importance of keeping young minds busy. Idle youth often turn to drugs and antisocial behavior. Jeffers said, “When your neighbor’s house is on fire, you need to wet yours.” This shows why communities must act together.
He promoted a “stitch in time” strategy. This approach addresses the root causes of youth frustration and drug use before they escalate into security threats. Acting early can prevent serious problems.
Jeffers also urged collaboration across all sectors. Parents, teachers, and community leaders must mentor and guide young people. Structured activities and programs can reduce risk and promote positive behavior.
In conclusion, the Commissioner warned that youth violence and drug challenges require collective effort. He urged the nation to act now to protect young people. Early action today can prevent bigger crises tomorrow.
