Haiti Sends Medical Team to Support Venezuela After Earthquakes

Haiti has sent a humanitarian medical mission to Venezuela after the powerful earthquakes that struck the country on June 24. The move comes even as the Caribbean nation faces economic and security challenges at home. The mission shows the country’s commitment to helping its regional neighbours during times of crisis.

Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Sinal Bertrand led the delegation, which arrived in Venezuela on Tuesday. The group includes 29 specialist doctors and 5.5 tonnes of medical supplies. The medical team has experts in orthopedics, surgery, anesthesiology, gynecology and internal medicine. They will work with local health officials to care for people injured in the disaster.

Authorities say the twin earthquakes killed 3,685 people and injured more than 16,700 others. Thousands of people also remain missing. Many hospitals continue to face heavy demand. To help meet those needs, the delegation brought ultrasound machines, oxygen concentrators and specialized pediatric medical equipment. These supplies will support emergency treatment in the hardest-hit communities.

Dr. Bertrand said the mission reflects the country’s support for the Venezuelan people. He explained that the government chose to send experienced medical specialists instead of a consultative team. The doctors stand ready to remain in Venezuela for 15, 20 or 30 days. They will stay even longer if local authorities request additional help.

Venezuelan officials welcomed the delegation at Simón Bolívar International Airport. Vice Minister of Outpatient Care Networks Dr. Noly Fernández thanked the Caribbean nation for its assistance. She described the mission as a strong example of regional solidarity during a difficult period. Health officials will send the doctors to Caracas and the state of La Guaira, where many families still need medical care.

The Government of Haiti also offered condolences to families who lost loved ones. In addition, officials reaffirmed their commitment to humanitarian cooperation across the region. They expressed confidence that Venezuela will recover from the disaster. For now, the medical team will continue providing emergency healthcare for as long as its support is needed.
