Garbage Gets Collected, but Workers’ Grievances Are Ignored: NSWMA Staff Speak Out
Garbage gets collected every day, yet NSWMA workers say leaders ignore their concerns.
Recently, an anonymous letter sent to Observer AM exposed unsafe conditions and poor management. In addition, the authors described a workplace filled with fear. They said anonymity remains their only protection.
According to the letter, workers “show up every day so your garbage disappears.” However, they feel management ignores their voices.
Observer media shared the letter with General Manager Indira James-Henry and Board Chairman Danley Philip. Meanwhile, both officials have not responded. Therefore, the claims remain unverified.
Former Chief Health Inspector Lionel Michael described the issues as serious. He urged workers to contact management directly. Furthermore, he advised them to request a formal meeting with the Board. He also called for an independent safety review.
The letter outlines several risks. For example, workers respond to landfill fires without proper safety gear. In addition, managers reassign staff suddenly to landfill duties. As a result, workers face dangerous situations without preparation.
Moreover, the authors reported broken machinery and poor maintenance. At times, supervisors blame workers for normal wear and tear. Consequently, staff feel unfair pressure.
They also claimed one manager rarely shows up but earns about EC $15,000 monthly. However, Observer could not confirm this claim.
Beyond safety issues, workers described a culture of silence. When employees speak up, they fear retaliation. In contrast, Human Resources often supports management.
Despite these problems, workers ask for simple changes. They want proper equipment, safe conditions, rest areas, and fair treatment. Ultimately, they want respect.
The letter ends with a strong message. These workers keep the country clean. Therefore, they deserve safe and fair workplaces.
Meanwhile, Observer media will continue to seek responses. As the situation develops, updates will follow.
