Tobago Carnival Bans Songs Glorifying Gun Violence

Tobago

Songs that glorify gun violence will not play at this year’s Tobago Carnival.

The decision follows a suggestion from Trinidad and Tobago police. Officers want promoters to remove songs that praise gang activity and violence from carnival events.

Police raised the issue during a recent meeting with the Tobago Promoters Association.

Senior Superintendent Rodhill Kirk said violent lyrics can affect the behaviour of some listeners. He said people can become more excited and aggressive when certain songs play.

“When you go out and observe it yourself, as soon as some songs come on, people get hyped based on the lyrical content,” Kirk told the Trinidad Guardian.

Kirk said people react to the messages they hear in the music. Police therefore want organisers to pay closer attention to the songs played at carnival events.

The Trinidad and Tobago Party Association supports the move. The association has also promised to help ensure a safe Tobago Carnival.

The decision targets songs that glorify gun violence, gang activity and other forms of violence. It does not mean organisers will ban all popular music from the celebrations.

Instead, promoters will need to avoid music that promotes violent behaviour or criminal activity.

Tobago Carnival will take place from October 30 to November 1. This year’s celebration will use the theme, “The Awakening.”

The annual event brings together residents and visitors for music, entertainment and cultural celebrations.

Police and event organisers will work together to maintain safety during the festivities. Promoters will also have to consider the type of music they include in their events.

The police recommendation comes as authorities continue to address concerns about violence and gang activity in Trinidad and Tobago.

Kirk said officers have personally observed changes in crowd behaviour when certain songs play. He believes the lyrical content can influence how some people respond during events.

The Tobago Promoters Association will play an important role in putting the new measure into practice. Promoters will need to make sure their entertainment programmes follow the agreed approach.

The Trinidad and Tobago Party Association has also pledged its support for the safety measures.

Tobago Carnival will begin on October 30 and run until November 1. Organisers are expected to continue working with police and other stakeholders before the celebrations begin.

The goal is to create a safer environment while allowing residents and visitors to enjoy Tobago’s carnival traditions.
