Barbuda Land Registry Set for August 2026 Launch
Barbuda will receive a dedicated Land Registry by August 2026 under a new government plan. Moreover, the Cabinet has approved measures to strengthen land administration on the island.
The Government of Antigua and Barbuda announced the decision following recent Cabinet discussions. Officials said the land adjudication process in Barbuda is nearing completion.
Cabinet expects the registry to launch formally by August 31, 2026. Therefore, authorities have already started preparing the transition process.
During the first phase, officials will manage the registry through Antigua’s existing Land Registry system. Under this arrangement, staff will create and maintain Barbuda’s land records centrally.
Meanwhile, the government plans to strengthen staffing, infrastructure and technical support over time. Officials say this approach will help ensure a smoother rollout process.
Cabinet approved the temporary arrangement to avoid operational problems during the early stages. In addition, officials considered staffing, procurement and training challenges before making the decision.
The government said creating a fully independent office immediately could create unnecessary difficulties. Therefore, authorities chose a gradual transition model instead.
At the same time, Cabinet agreed to assess the future need for a satellite office in Barbuda. Officials said they will review demand as operations continue to expand.
Preparations for recruitment and staff training have already started. Furthermore, officials plan to use temporary facilities and remote learning platforms during the transition period.
The government believes the new registry will improve land services across Barbuda. Officials also expect stronger confidence in property transactions and ownership records.
In addition, the registry should improve public access to land information and administrative services. Authorities say the system will also strengthen legal certainty involving land ownership.
Meanwhile, the development aligns with wider government land initiatives in Barbuda. Officials continue preparing land for sale to Barbudans under the government’s $1 land programme.
Authorities are currently preparing 216 acres at Louis Hill for clearing and future sale. The project forms part of broader plans involving land access and development opportunities.
Cabinet described the new Land Registry as an important step toward stronger governance and improved property administration in Barbuda.
