Former Chief Magistrate Returns to Government Role
Former Chief Magistrate Joanne Walsh has returned to government service less than three years after disciplinary findings ended her judicial career.
Moreover, an internal memorandum dated May 14 placed Walsh at the Department of Immigration. The document identified her as a General Consultant.
According to the memorandum, her role includes oversight linked to the Intel and Prosecution Unit. However, the government has not publicly announced the appointment.
Walsh previously served as Chief Magistrate for 12 years. However, that chapter ended in 2023 after disciplinary proceedings against her.
At first, the Judicial and Legal Services Commission suspended Walsh while investigating ten disciplinary charges. Later, officials added five more counts before the hearing concluded.
As a result, Walsh faced 15 disciplinary charges in total.
The allegations included failure to remit funds to the government treasury. In addition, the charges involved the destruction of official documents, magistrates’ notes, and government property.
Eventually, Walsh was found guilty on all fifteen counts.
Following the disciplinary ruling, Walsh reportedly submitted a retirement letter. The government later accepted the retirement, according to reports.
Now, less than three years later, Walsh has returned to public service through the Department of Immigration. The appointment reportedly forms part of efforts to strengthen enforcement operations within the department.
Meanwhile, the memorandum tied her responsibilities directly to the Intel and Prosecution Unit. However, officials have not publicly commented on the decision.
The development has already attracted attention because of Walsh’s previous role within the judicial system and the disciplinary findings against her.
Nevertheless, the memorandum confirms that Walsh is now serving in a consultancy position within the government structure.
