Malaka Parker Urges Senators to Strengthen Accountability

Parker called for stronger accountability in the Senate on Monday. Moreover, she urged government senators to carefully review laws and national decisions.

Opposition Senator Malaka Parker spoke after taking her oath at Government House. Meanwhile, Deputy Governor General Sir Clare Roberts led the swearing-in ceremony.

During her remarks, Parker stressed the Senate’s duty to protect democracy. In addition, she said senators must closely examine legislation from the Lower House.

“What I’m asking in this moment is for the government senators to function in the true spirit of what that chamber is supposed to represent,” Parker said.

Furthermore, she explained that the Upper House must remain a chamber of revision and accountability. According to Parker, strong oversight helps build public trust in Parliament.

She also encouraged senators to improve scrutiny in national debates. As a result, she believes Parliament can better serve the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Supporters, relatives, union officials, and friends attended the ceremony. Meanwhile, the event marked Parker’s return to the Senate after serving from 2009 to 2014.

Parker described the occasion as both humbling and meaningful. In addition, she said parliamentary service carries serious responsibility.

“I remain humble, and it is an awesome responsibility to stand in the halls of Parliament,” Parker said. “I treat it with reverence. I treat it with respect.”

During the ceremony, Sir Clare Roberts urged Parker to serve with discipline and humility. Moreover, he encouraged her to make positive contributions to the country.

Several speakers also highlighted leadership and public service. Consequently, the ceremony focused strongly on respect, responsibility, and national duty.
Parker now joins Chester Hughes, Jonathan Wenner, and Ashworth Azille on the opposition bench in the Senate. As a result, the opposition team in the Upper House is now complete.

The Senate reviews bills and government policies before final approval. Therefore, Parker said senators must continue defending accountability and parliamentary oversight.countability and proper parliamentary oversight.
