Antigua Positioned to Benefit from UK–Caribbean Clean Energy Push
Antigua and Barbuda is being encouraged to tap into renewable energy resources. Solar, wind, and geothermal power offer significant potential.
First, experts say the Caribbean can generate more clean energy than it consumes. Surplus power could be exported or converted into fuels like green hydrogen.
Moreover, the region remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Around 87 percent of CARICOM electricity still comes from oil. This drives some of the highest energy costs in the world.
In fact, households in the Caribbean often pay two to three times more for electricity than larger economies. High costs push demand for cleaner alternatives.
Additionally, the UK has supported the Caribbean transition since 2015. It invested about US$39 million in solar, energy efficiency, and geothermal projects across the Eastern Caribbean.
Meanwhile, Antigua and Barbuda has expanded solar power. However, experts say more aggressive efforts are needed to fully benefit from regional initiatives.
Significant regional milestones are underway. Dominica will soon commission the first geothermal plant in the English-speaking Caribbean. The UK has supported this project.
Similarly, Grenada and St. Lucia are exploring geothermal development. These projects reflect regional collaboration and investment in clean energy.
However, progress across CARICOM has been slow. The 2027 target for 47 percent renewable electricity is far from reach, with only 13 percent achieved by 2023.
Small island states face challenges. Limited grid capacity, high investment costs, and fragmented markets hinder large-scale projects.
Still, solutions are emerging. Regional energy procurement, grid modernization, and private sector reforms could accelerate progress. Training and technical capacity are also critical.
Furthermore, the UK will support the Global Clean Power Alliance from 2026 to 2028. This initiative provides expertise and mobilizes investment for Caribbean clean energy.
For Antigua and Barbuda, success could reduce electricity bills and increase energy security. Renewable energy also boosts resilience against global oil shocks.
Finally, officials emphasize urgency. While challenges remain, the opportunity to advance clean energy and lower costs is within reach. Immediate action could position Antigua and Barbuda as a regional leader.
