When Summers Hit Qatar, an Air-Conditioned ‘Forest’ Offers Cool Escape

When

When summers hit Qatar, residents usually retreat indoors to escape the extreme heat.

Consequently, most people shelter at home or work with air conditioning. Alternatively, they visit super-cooled shopping malls. Driving between them in chilled cars is also common.

However, Gewan Island, a new man-made island off Doha, offers a very different experience. Here, visitors can stroll outside comfortably thanks to an air-conditioned “forest.”

The island’s central promenade, called the Crystal Walk, stretches 450 meters. Despite being open to the elements, its temperature is carefully regulated.

Moreover, a canopy of tree-like structures shades visitors from direct sunlight. In addition, vents below trap cooled air. Mini water fountains further enhance the refreshing environment.

Furthermore, Gewan takes Qatar’s outdoor cooling innovations beyond parks and shopping areas. The canopy features artificial branches covered in 10 tonnes of crystals. Meanwhile, solar panels convert sunlight into electricity to power the aircon.

Inside the walkway, 180 crystal panels in the floor display themed landscapes, animals, and local motifs. As a result, visitors can see penguin colonies, shoals of fish, camel caravans, and musical instruments.

The area maintains a pleasant 21-23°C (70-73°F) all year. Therefore, it quickly became a popular tourist attraction. Local guide Siham Haleem notes that visitors are “genuinely amazed” every time.

Likewise, Lebanese expat Omar Abou Mourad enjoys bringing his family. He also appreciates the combination of design, restaurants, and shops.

In addition, Gewan Island holds Guinness World Records as the largest outdoor air-conditioned mall and largest outdoor interactive light canopy.

Previously, the 400,000-square-meter island served as a construction staging ground for The Pearl. However, it now features walking routes, cafes, restaurants, and artworks.

Looking ahead, future developments include a hotel complex, golf course, and leisure facilities. Consequently, the central area prioritizes pedestrians over cars, creating a walkable community.

Meanwhile, a waterfront promenade connects to The Pearl. Water taxis provide short canal trips for 200 Qatari riyals ($55). Furthermore, restaurants, cafés, and themed venues offer casual and luxury dining for residents and visitors alike.

Overall, Gewan Island combines innovation, design, and leisure. Therefore, it offers a cool, unique outdoor experience in Qatar’s intense summer heat.
