Key Venezuela Port Opens With US Aid as Burials Begin
Key Venezuela Port reopened after the US military repaired the Port of La Guaira. The move helps speed up aid delivery after the twin earthquakes. The disaster has killed more than 1,700 people. It has also injured about 5,000. Many others remain missing, but officials have not given a final count.
Key Venezuela Port sits in one of the hardest-hit areas. The earthquakes struck five days ago. They destroyed entire neighbourhoods. Since then, rescue work has shifted more toward recovery. At the port, an AFP reporter saw a warehouse filled with unidentified bodies. The bodies were stored in white and black bags. A few coffins were also present. The USS Fort Lauderdale docked at the port and delivered aid supplies.
Key Venezuela Port also supports wider recovery work. US airmen helped restore operations at Simon Bolivar International Airport near Caracas. That airport also suffered heavy damage. At the same time, a new 4.6 magnitude tremor hit the region. It added more fear for people living in affected areas.
Key Venezuela Port operates under strict control. Authorities have militarised La Guaira. They also require permits to enter the disaster zone. Many residents have criticised the slow pace of government aid. Meanwhile, international support has grown. Twenty-seven countries sent nearly 40 search and rescue teams. More than 2,000 workers and over 160 search dogs now support the mission, according to the UN coordinator in Venezuela.
Key Venezuela Port remains a key hub for relief efforts. The United Nations has prepared 10,000 body bags. It hopes the final death toll stays lower than early estimates. The 72-hour survival window has now passed. Still, rescuers continue limited searches. On Monday, crews rescued a 21-year-old man in Tanaguarena. The case shows that survival is still possible, even as conditions worsen.
