Rough Seas Trigger Small Craft Advisory Until Tuesday
Rough seas and strong winds have prompted a small craft advisory for Antigua and Barbuda through Tuesday. Moreover, officials are warning mariners to remain vigilant as hazardous marine conditions persist across open waters.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued the advisory at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 17, 2026. In particular, the warning affects open Atlantic waters within 20 nautical miles of the islands.
Forecasters said moderate to fresh winds are creating dangerous sea conditions. As a result, wind waves and swells continue to affect mainly the Atlantic sides of Antigua and Barbuda.
Officials explained that the threat level to life, property, and marine activities remains moderate. Therefore, small vessel operators face possible danger while navigating the affected waters.
The advisory means winds between 17 and 21 knots are occurring or expected soon. In addition, seas of seven feet or higher remain possible across affected areas.
According to the forecast, winds over open waters will blow from the east at 28 to 39 kilometres per hour. Furthermore, gusts could reach up to 61 kilometres per hour.
Meanwhile, wave heights are expected to range between six and eight feet. However, some areas could see waves reaching nearly 10 feet.
Forecasters also warned that these conditions may lead to serious impacts at sea. Potential dangers include injuries to mariners, capsized vessels, and damage to marine equipment.
In addition, rough seas could disrupt fishing activities and marine transportation. Officials also warned about possible financial losses and shortages of fish products.
The Meteorological Services strongly advised inexperienced mariners to avoid navigating during the advisory period. Small vessels, especially, face greater risks in rough conditions.
“Please continue to monitor these hazardous, life-threatening marine conditions,” the advisory stated.
Officials are encouraging residents and mariners to follow updates from the Meteorological Office through local media and online platforms. Updates are available through antiguamet.com and the @abmetservice social media pages.
Forecaster Letitia Humphreys issued the advisory and urged the public to remain cautious while the dangerous conditions continue.
