Moderate Air Quality Alert Issued Over Dust
Moderate air quality conditions have prompted an official alert in Antigua and Barbuda as Saharan dust continues affecting the country.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services issued the advisory at 8:30 p.m. on Friday.
According to officials, the dust surge marks the sixth major Saharan dust event affecting the country in 2026.
Moreover, the Meteorological Service said airborne particles linked to the dust plume reduced air quality levels across the nation.
The advisory placed the air quality index between 51 and 65. In addition, officials issued an Air Pollution Alert Level II notice.
While the overall health risk remains low for most residents, some vulnerable groups could experience problems.
Officials warned that asthmatics, elderly residents, children, and people with heart or respiratory conditions face greater health concerns during the dust event.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Service said air quality remains acceptable for the general public.
However, active adults, children, and people with respiratory illnesses should limit prolonged outdoor activity while the dust haze remains present.
The advisory will stay in effect until Saturday night.
Residents across Antigua and Barbuda have already reported hazy skies and reduced visibility because of the dust.
Saharan dust events frequently affect the Caribbean during parts of the year. Strong winds carry dust particles from Africa across the Atlantic Ocean into the region.
As a result, countries across the Caribbean often experience reduced air quality and increased respiratory discomfort during major dust surges.
Health officials usually advise sensitive groups to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary outdoor exertion during these periods.
Meanwhile, residents are encouraged to continue monitoring updates from the Meteorological Service and local media outlets.
Officials may also issue additional advisories if conditions worsen or remain in place longer than expected.
Overall, authorities continue monitoring the situation closely as Antigua and Barbuda experiences another round of Saharan dust.
