Government Waives Utility Arrears for Disconnected Households
GOVERNMENT of Antigua and Barbuda has approved a utilities amnesty to support disconnected households. Specifically, the plan removes all outstanding arrears for eligible residents.
The policy applies to customers without electricity, water, or landline service for more than 180 days. In other words, households disconnected for at least six months can benefit.
The announcement followed the weekly Cabinet meeting. At that time, Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant outlined the initiative.
According to officials, the amnesty aims to provide relief to families facing financial hardship. At the same time, it seeks to restore access to essential services.
Affected residents should contact the Antigua Public Utilities Authority to arrange reconnection. Therefore, officials urge eligible persons to act quickly.
Cabinet said the measure forms part of a broader effort to ease cost-of-living pressures. Moreover, it ensures basic services remain accessible to all citizens.
The policy also targets vulnerable and low-income households. In particular, it supports those affected by long-term disconnections.
Meanwhile, Cabinet discussed several other matters during the same meeting. These included the recent dissolution of Parliament and preparations for general elections.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Gaston Browne. As a result, the government continues to address both economic and national issues.
Officials stress that public cooperation will play a key role in the programme’s success. For this reason, they encourage residents to take full advantage of the amnesty.
Overall, the initiative offers a fresh start for disconnected households. Ultimately, it helps restore access to essential services while easing financial pressure.
