NDP Wins Big: ULP Reduced to Just Gonsalves in Historic 14–1 Defeat

Friday

NDP secured a sweeping victory in Thursday’s general election, dismantling the 24-year rule of the Unity Labour Party (ULP). The opposition captured 14 of the 15 seats in Parliament. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves held onto the only remaining ULP seat.

The result shocked many voters and political analysts. It marks the most dramatic shift in recent St. Vincent history and ends Gonsalves’ bid for a sixth consecutive term.

Early Friday, NDP leader Dr. Godwin Friday took to social media to declare victory. He called the polls “a new dawn” for the nation. Observers expect him to be sworn in as the next prime minister shortly.

Additionally, key regional and international leaders sent their congratulations. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness praised the peaceful and democratic outcome. Meanwhile, Taiwan’s ambassador extended good wishes, noting St. Vincent remains a close partner despite past discussions about shifting diplomatic ties toward China.

Friday’s win signals a major change. Over two decades, Gonsalves built a solid power base on social initiatives and regional diplomacy. However, polling showed growing voter frustration with employment issues and rising living costs.

The NDP campaigned heavily on promises of job creation, improved incomes, and fresh leadership. They also pledged to review but not immediately sever diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Voters appeared ready for economic relief and a new political direction.

Furthermore, many analysts believe the result reflects a generational shift. Youth turnout surged, and many younger voters backed the NDP’s vision of progress and opportunity.

With 14 seats, the NDP holds a strong majority. That gives Friday’s incoming government broad power to enact reforms quickly. Plans already include boosting tourism, investing in infrastructure, and reforms to attract foreign investment.

Still, the new leadership will face high expectations. Citizens expect quick results for jobs, inflation relief, and improved public services. The margin of victory gives the NDP room to maneuver — but also raises the stakes.

Meanwhile, Gonsalves acknowledged defeat and congratulated the new government. He said he accepts the result and promised to serve his constituents faithfully. His long tenure ends, and a new era begins under NDP leadership
