SLBMC Director Praises Nurses on International Nurses Day
SLBMC Medical Director Dr. Shivon Belle Jarvis has praised nurses for their vital role in healthcare. Meanwhile, she highlighted their importance during International Nurses Day.
Jarvis said nurses remain central to patient care and the future of healthcare delivery. In addition, she described their work as essential to saving lives.
She issued her remarks in a message marking International Nurses Day. The observance takes place each year on May 12.
Furthermore, she said strong healthcare systems cannot exist without nurses. “Health for All is impossible” without their contribution, she stated.
Jarvis also emphasized the need for better support systems. For example, she called for leadership opportunities and professional development.
In addition, she urged healthcare institutions to invest in mentorship programmes. She also stressed the importance of mental health support for nurses.
According to Jarvis, institutions must empower nurses through shared governance. As a result, she said nurses can take on stronger leadership roles.
She also encouraged autonomy in clinical decision-making. However, she noted that teamwork must remain central to care delivery.
Meanwhile, Jarvis said ongoing training helps nurses grow in their profession. Therefore, she called for continued investment in their skills and development.
She added that empathy, commitment, and teamwork should guide the profession. In her view, these values strengthen patient care and outcomes.
“You are our nurses, you are indeed our future,” she said. She also added that empowered nurses save more lives.
In addition, she stressed that healthcare workers deserve recognition beyond symbolic celebrations. Instead, she called for long-term support and action.
Jarvis said institutions must also care for the wellbeing of nurses. Therefore, mental health support should remain a key priority.
International Nurses Day highlights the contribution of nurses worldwide. It also serves as a reminder of their daily sacrifices.
Across Antigua and Barbuda, nurses continue working in hospitals and clinics under pressure. Even so, they remain committed to patient care.
Finally, Jarvis encouraged continued appreciation for nurses across all levels of healthcare. She said their dedication will shape a stronger and healthier future.
