Family Breaks Silence After Deadly Bus Crash
Family members of the bus driver involved in Tuesday’s fatal crash on All Saints Road are now speaking publicly. Meanwhile, they expressed deep sorrow over the death of NSWMA worker Okeem Lightfoot.
In a public statement, the family offered condolences to Lightfoot’s loved ones. They also confirmed full cooperation with police investigators.
“There are truly no words that can fully express the sorrow we feel,” the statement said. Furthermore, the family described the tragedy as heartbreaking and painful for everyone involved.
The crash happened Tuesday morning along All Saints Road. According to police, the bus travelled east at high speed before the driver lost control.
As a result, the vehicle veered off the road and struck Lightfoot. Tragically, the impact pinned him between the bus and a parked truck.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene. However, Lightfoot died from his injuries before medical teams could help him.
Police later confirmed he was pronounced dead around 10:56 a.m. He was 29 years old and lived in Swetes Village.
At the time of the incident, Lightfoot worked with a grass-cutting team from the National Solid Waste Management Authority. Therefore, many coworkers and residents were left shocked by the sudden loss.
Meanwhile, the driver’s family said they remain devastated by the incident. Because of the active investigation, they declined to discuss specific details publicly.
Even so, they stressed their willingness to assist authorities fully. They also asked the public for understanding during the difficult period.
Health Minister Michael Joseph later visited the scene. Afterward, he admitted the tragedy left him speechless.
“Someone leaves home for work and never returns,” the minister said. In addition, he urged motorists to use greater caution on the nation’s roads.
He reminded drivers to obey speed limits and remain aware of others nearby. “We all have a duty of care,” he added.
Police also extended condolences to Lightfoot’s family and friends. Moreover, officers urged motorists to follow traffic laws and drive responsibly.
The investigation into the deadly crash remains ongoing. Meanwhile, family members, coworkers, and residents continue mourning the loss of a young worker whose life ended far too soon.
