Antiguan Students Hit Hard as UWI Cave Hill Shuttle Crisis Worsens

Antiguan

Antiguan students are struggling because the UWI Cave Hill Campus shuttle service in Barbados is failing. The disruption affects the entire student body.

The Guild of Students warns that patience is running out. Repeated efforts to fix the shuttle have failed. Consequently, students cannot move easily between classes, residences, and off-campus housing.

Regional students, including those from Antigua and Barbuda, face the biggest challenges. Many depend heavily on the shuttle because they lack private transport and know local routes poorly.

The Guild first raised the issue on March 6. Senior university officials, including the Registrar’s Office, Campus Security, and Accommodation Services, attended the meeting. Student polls revealed serious safety concerns, especially for those traveling late at night.

Officials angered students when they suggested providing “sleeping bags” for those who could not return home. They also cited staff safety during extended hours. Students criticized both proposals.

Further discussions occurred on March 10. The Guild’s Commuters’ Representative asked why the administration operated only one shuttle bus. However, the administration still has not explained when normal service will resume.

The situation escalated on March 14. The Guild’s President wrote to the Deputy Principal to express growing frustration. The administration responded on March 16, citing staff illness and financial constraints.

Later that day, the Guild held an emergency meeting and decided to go public. They sent a formal letter to regional media on March 23 to raise awareness.

Attempts to hold additional meetings stalled. A March 20 meeting failed because the Deputy Principal traveled. A follow-up meeting with the Registrar’s Office remains unconfirmed.

The Guild rejects the claim that the shuttle is merely supplementary. They insist the shuttle ensures student safety, class attendance, and full participation in campus life.

The Guild recommends temporary alternative transport, more security patrols, clearer communication about shuttle operations, and hybrid learning while the issue continues.

With no immediate solution, the Guild will continue advocating for students. They warn that students may demonstrate if the administration does not act urgently.

The shuttle crisis remains unresolved, and regional students still struggle to navigate daily campus life safely.
