Antigua Joins First Western Hemisphere Defense Summit
Antigua and Barbuda has joined the inaugural Western Hemisphere Chiefs of Defense Conference in Washington, D.C. Moreover, Brigadier Telbert Benjamin is representing the nation.
Benjamin serves as Chief of Defence Staff of the Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force. He is meeting with senior military leaders from 34 countries. Therefore, the conference marks a major regional gathering.
Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, convened the high-level meeting. The aim is to strengthen partnerships across the hemisphere. In addition, leaders are working to enhance regional security cooperation.
During the opening session, U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth addressed delegates. He urged militaries to unite against “bad actors” in the region. Furthermore, he called for closer collaboration.
Hegseth encouraged expanded training and intelligence-sharing. He also highlighted the need for joint operations. In addition, he mentioned basing and overflight arrangements. These steps, he argued, would improve security.
He said the United States is prioritising homeland and hemispheric security. Under President Donald J. Trump, he noted, this focus has intensified. Moreover, he referenced what he described as a renewed application of the Monroe Doctrine.
According to Hegseth, stronger military ties are essential. He pointed to drug trafficking, illegal migration, and organized crime. Therefore, he stressed united regional action.
The conference also reviewed ongoing U.S.-led efforts. One key initiative is Operation Southern Spear. This operation targets drug trafficking in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific. As a result, leaders examined its impact and progress.
Benjamin’s presence highlights Antigua and Barbuda’s active role in hemispheric defence dialogue. It also reflects the country’s commitment to regional partnerships. Through participation, the nation strengthens its security ties.
Overall, the meeting brings together defence chiefs to address shared threats. At the same time, it fosters cooperation across borders. For Antigua and Barbuda, the event signals continued engagement in regional security efforts.
