Mottley Wins Third Term as BLP Sweeps All Seats
Mottley has secured a third straight term as Prime Minister of Barbados. Moreover, her Barbados Labour Party won all 30 seats in the general election.
State broadcaster CBC Barbados confirmed the result early Thursday. As a result, the BLP will govern for another five years. The clean sweep extends the party’s strong hold on power.
In addition, the outcome leaves Parliament without an elected opposition member. Opposition leader Ralph Thorne lost his seat. Therefore, the House of Assembly will have no opposition presence.
On election night, Mottley addressed cheering supporters. She described the victory as a clear mandate. Furthermore, she said the result supports her plans for social and economic reform.
“Our mission first and foremost is to stop poor people from being poor,” Mottley said. She also pledged to remove injustice and expand opportunity. Thus, she framed the win as support for fairness and growth.
The 60-year-old leader remains one of the Caribbean’s most prominent political figures. At the same time, she promised to safeguard democratic institutions. Barbados is marking 75 years of universal adult suffrage. Therefore, she stressed the importance of protecting democracy.
During the campaign, the BLP focused on economic stability. It also addressed cost-of-living pressures. In addition, the party highlighted Barbados’ international voice. These themes shaped much of its message to voters.
Meanwhile, the opposition centered its campaign on crime and infrastructure. It argued that domestic concerns needed more attention. However, voters delivered a decisive verdict.
Barbados has a population of about 283,000 people. Now, the country enters a new parliamentary term. The government holds a full mandate in the House of Assembly.
As a result, attention will shift to delivery. Many will watch how the administration carries out its promises. For now, Mottley and the BLP celebrate a historic sweep and a renewed term in office.
