China Donates 1,500 Solar Street Lights to Antigua

China

China on Tuesday donated 1,500 solar-powered street lights to Antigua and Barbuda, strengthening the country’s renewable energy and climate resilience efforts. The donation was formally handed over during a ceremony attended by government officials, diplomats, and technical partners.

Senator Michael Joseph, representing the Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment, and Civil Service Affairs, said the project represents more than new infrastructure. Instead, he described it as a clear commitment to sustainability, public safety, and national resilience.

The solar street lights operate independently of fossil fuel electricity. As a result, they reduce carbon emissions while lowering energy demand on the national grid. Joseph noted that the systems demonstrate the government’s determination to use clean and abundant solar energy for the public good.

Importantly, the initiative will benefit remote and underserved communities. In many of these areas, electricity access can be inconsistent. Reliable lighting, therefore, improves daily life and strengthens community safety.

Joseph also emphasized the security benefits of the project. Well-lit streets deter crime, reduce traffic accidents, and improve visibility after dark. Consequently, residents gain greater peace of mind, particularly in rural and vulnerable neighborhoods.

He encouraged citizens and community leaders to protect the street lights. According to Joseph, the systems should be treated as shared public assets that promote safety, equality, and hope.

Yangde Electric Group of China is implementing the project. Chairman Zhang Aiwen explained that the solar systems were designed specifically for Antigua and Barbuda’s tropical climate. They feature high energy efficiency, strong wind resistance, and enhanced durability.

Zhang added that the company’s engineering team will remain in the country. The team will oversee installation, provide technical training, and ensure proper maintenance for long-term operation.

Meanwhile, Chinese Ambassador to Antigua and Barbuda, Her Excellency Zhang Wei, said the donation followed a memorandum of understanding signed during Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s recent visit to China. She noted that both countries recognize climate change as a shared global challenge.

The ceremony also marked the launch of a technical training program. This program will equip local technicians and engineers with the skills needed to maintain and expand the solar lighting systems nationwide.
