Community CERT Training Boosts Barbuda Emergency Readiness

Community

Community volunteers in Barbuda are gaining new skills through a series of emergency response trainings. The National Office of Disaster Services (NODS) launched the program to build local resilience.

Currently, 25 participants from different districts are attending a four-day Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training. It began on Monday and focuses on practical skills. Furthermore, CERT teaches participants to act until professional help arrives.

The training covers disaster management, fire safety, search and rescue, and telecommunications. Specifically, participants learn to use VHF radios. These skills prepare volunteers to respond efficiently during emergencies. Additionally, NODS emphasizes teamwork, coordination, and community awareness.

Previously, NODS conducted similar sessions in November. Those sessions ran for three consecutive weekends, reaching more residents. Moreover, last week a one-week training took place in Barbuda with 20 participants. These programs aim to create a network of prepared volunteers across the islands.

In addition, NODS staff assisted with equipping the newly built Barbuda Disaster Office. They delivered essential equipment and supplies to support ongoing operations. This effort ensures that local teams have the tools they need for rapid disaster response.

According to organizers, the CERT program helps bridge the gap between emergencies and professional responders. Volunteers trained through CERT can provide immediate support to their communities during crises. They can also assist in evacuation, first aid, and emergency communications.

The program also fosters stronger community ties. By training local residents, NODS encourages collaboration and preparedness across districts. Volunteers gain confidence and practical knowledge while contributing to overall safety.

Moving forward, NODS plans additional CERT sessions for more participants. The goal is to expand Barbuda’s emergency readiness network. Likewise, ongoing support and training will ensure volunteers stay up to date with best practices.

Ultimately, these initiatives strengthen Barbuda’s disaster resilience. Through training, equipment, and community engagement, the island is better prepared for emergencies. CERT volunteers play a critical role in protecting lives, property, and community wellbeing.
